Rhetoric, Remembrance, and Visual Form: Sighting Memory

This book provides a multifaceted investigation of the intersections among visual and memorial forms in contemporary art, politics, and society by focusing on their interrelated rhetorical functions. In doing so, it offers new insights into how memories may be seen (or sighted) in visual forms, but also how visual forms constitute noteworthy material sites of memory, and how images and memory cohere as modes of rhetoric. The volume offers a detailed and thematically organized analysis of material (and not merely metaphorical) intersections among memory and images that will broaden our understanding of their mutual provenance, and builds upon and synthesizes a loose cluster of past and present associations between visual and memorial forms. Considering the scholarly fields of memory studies and visual culture, along with the work of contemporary artists and designers who explore memory and vision, the contributors offer a concerted interdisciplinary exchange.
