The Rise of Economic Societies in the Eighteenth Century Patriotic Reform in Europe and North America

This collection of essays explores the emergence of economic societies in the British Isles and their development into a European, American and global reform movement in the eighteenth century. Its fourteen contributions demonstrate the intellectual horizons and international networks of this widespread and influential phenomenon.

KOEN STAPELBROEK is senior lecturer in the history of political thought and public administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His research focuses on political and economic thought in eighteenth-century Europe. Currently, he is finishing a monograph on Dutch eighteenth-century reform debates.

JANI MARJANEN is PhD student at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His main interests are eighteenth-century discourses of patriotism and theory of conceptual history. He is currently completing his thesis on economic patriotism within the Finnish Economic Society and serves as the assistant editor of Contributions to the History of Concepts.
