1923. In the road outside the picket-fence dust still was slowly settling that had been kicked up by the rig of the last deacon to wrench himself reluctantly away and leave the new pastor to get shaken down without more neighborly assistance; though the pangs of parting had been tempered in the bosom of each by the knowledge shared in common, if tacitly, that the deacon would find some excuse to drop round again after supper, on the off-chance of being asked either to lend a hand at something or, better still, to give advice; in the offer of which offices he would most improbably be alone.
