School Rampage Shootings and Other Youth Disturbances: Early Preventative Interventions

School Rampage Shootings and Other Youth Disturbancesand its accompanying cd provide early preventative interventions for elementary-school age children. Building both on research and on decades of experience working with the conditions, traits, and skill failures that have been identified in rampage shooters, the book links these personal child and childhood environmental conditions to a number of symptoms, disturbances, and/or disorders in youth or adulthood, including the expression of rampage violence. Part I of School Rampage Shootings and Other Youth Disturbancescreates a framework for understanding the youths who engage in rampage violence and the factors that contribute to their violence. Part II describes interventions intended to prevent the likelihood of rampage violence, related forms of school-based aggression, and other internalizing and externalizing problems and disorders. The materials on the cd lay out exercises and targeted tactics that mental-health professionals, teachers, and parents, can use to teach coping skills, self-regulation, tolerance, peer support, and empathy.

Kathleen Nader, DSW, is the former director of evaluations for UCLA's program in childhood trauma, violence, and sudden bereavement and has been director of Two Suns Childhood Trauma Program for many years. She is an internationally recognized expert on child trauma and posttraumatic stress and is the author of Understanding and Assessing Trauma in Children and Adolescents: Measures, Methods, and Youth in Context (Routledge, 2008).
