Pebbles in the Water

B. Lewis Barnett, Jr., MD: Professor Emeritus and Founding Chair Department of Family Medicine University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Barnett is regarded by his colleagues as the quintessential country doctor. He practiced in his hometown, Woodruff, South Carolina, from 1950-70, except for two years in the U.S. Navy, before becoming involved in academic family medicine. He has served as president of the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, and president of the American Board of Family Practice. He has been honored by the American Academy of Family Physicians with the Thomas W. Johnson Award for his contribution to family medicine education, and has received the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine's Certificate of Excellence, as well as the F. Marian Bishop Award for significant enhancement of the academic credibility of family medicine. The University of Virginia also gave him its highest honor, the Thomas Jefferson Award. Dr. Barnett retired in 2000, and since then he and his wife of forty-five years, Annalyne, have made their home near four of their five grandchildren in Kennesaw, Georgia
