Troubled Periphery : The Crisis of India's North East

This book maps the evolution of India's North-East into a constituent region of the republic and analyzes the perpetual crisis in the region since Independence. It highlights how linguistic and leadership issues have long been the seed of contention in the region and how factors like ethnicity, ideology, and religion further aggravate the conflicts. It also throws light on the major insurgencies, internal displacements, protest movements, and the regional drug and weapons trade in the region. Finally, it suggests a policy framework to combat the crises.

Subir Bhaumik is an eminent journalist and academic researcher. He has been with the BBC since 1994 and his previous journalistic assignments include Reuters, Ananda Bazar Patrika, PTI and the Time magazine. His first book Insurgent Crossfire was well acclaimed. He has also written articles for many books and journals. He is a member of the independent think tank, Calcutta Research Group, Kolkata and the working president of the Guwahati-based Northeast Policy Alternatives. He has been Queen Elizabeth House Fellow at Oxford University (1989-90) and Eurasian-Nets Fellow at Frankfurt University (2009).
