Nigerian Christianity and the Society of African Missions

The 9th of March 1862 is a very significant date in the Nigerian Church history. On that day, Fr. Francesco Borghero SMA celebrated his first Mass in Nigeria in the house of Mr. Carrena. This is the beginning of the establishment of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. The book takes us through the initial contacts of Nigeria with Christianity from the time of the Portuguese exploration in the 15th century up to the present day, visiting significant moments in the whole story of the Catholic Church against the general socio-political and religious background. A section of the book traces the exact location in Lagos where the First Mass was celebrated.After going through the past history, the book analyses some past and present mission strategies and addresses some key challenges for today.
