Sisters of Gore: Seven Gothic Melodramas by British Women, 1790-1843

The publication of these popular 19th century stage plays is a cause for celebration for theater enthusiasts, who will now have an opportunity to stage and perform in the works. It will alko interest those who are involved in the reassessment of women's place in society in the past two centuries. Until now melodrama of this period available in print was almost exclusively written by men, and the existence of works by women was little known. Consequently, theater historians have concentrated on the work of male playwrights. A reason for this has been the lack of knowledge of a representative female canon, particularly of melodramas by women written before the Theater Regulation Act of 1843.
