This book explores the idea that in certain cases, the strong despotic state is the only way to maintain basic order. Looking at late medieval and early modern France, for example, the author asserts that asocial behavior is not a marginal phenomenon, but rather a proces that defined the nature of society and a factor that must be taken into account when analyzing social changes.
