Jay is not interested in what "experience" is or might be; rather, he is attempting to understand why so many thinkers in so many different traditions have felt compelled to do precisely that. He ranges from the Greeks to Foucault, and in between covers, among others, Buber, Kant, James, Benjamin, Adorno, and Barthes.
