Soul in Ink

It sure seemed much longer. I worked at the Philadelphia Daily News for ten years, from 1998 to 2008. While it is impossible to distill my career into a number of stories, the ten proceeding articles went a long way towards defining my tenure at the paper...So in no small way, these are the stories that made me the writer I am today; I hope when you read these stories, you will see what I have seen, and feel what I have felt during my years of covering the streets of Philadelphia. Many of these stories are heart breaking; all were interesting and caused me a great deal of introspection. You will also notice the prevalence of newsroom politics, and what happens when a reporter bumps up against the old-school industry hierarchy that has felled a number of young and veteran reporters alike. Truly, it is part coming-of-age tale of a black reporter covering his native city. I hope you enjoy these stories; and if you were to come away with a better understanding of Philadelphia, journalism and The Philadelphia Daily News, we will all be the better for it.
