Spirituality and the Ethics of Torture

The "war on terror" has sparked great debate about torture. What exactly is torture? Why is it wrong? Should we torture suspected terrorists with information about future violent acts? This book takes a fresh look at these questions by considering torture as an assault on the human spirit. Maintaining that all human beings are valuable, it rejects moral defenses of torture, and highlights practices like sensory deprivation and forced nudity, which perniciously attack the human psyche. The author also calls for an absolute ban on torture, and urges Americans to repent for the abuses the U.S. has committed in the "war on terror." Book jacket.

Derek S. Jeffreys is Associate Professor of Humanistic Studies and Religion at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Specializing in ethics and the philosophy of religion, he is author of Defending Human Dignity: John Paul II and Political Realism (2004).
