The stage out of Harper's Town bound for Rainwater was late leaving - a bad omen for driver Charlie Deakin. The passenger list caused him further anxiety, including as it did the troublesome banker Willard Pierce and his provocative wife Madelaine; the salacious storekeeper, Lemuel Buthnott; the stranger, Holden; and gunslinger Mr Jones. Then there was the desert route, which Charlie hated, and the prospect of unwelcome riders approaching fast in a cloud of dust. Bad omens could sometimes only get darker...
