Today's avid Trek fan has access to in-depth references and comprehensive companion guides about the Star Trek universe. But for the casual Star Trek viewer, a person who's not inclined to describe himself as a "Trekky," such weighty tomes can be daunting ("I don't want to read 725 pages on Deep Space 9"), or a trifle stigmatizing ("I am not a geek!"). While he/she may scoff at people who wear pointed ears, they still immensely enjoy Star Trek whenever they stumble upon it while channel surfing, and they occasionally wish they could remember a bit of Star Trek ephemera ("What the heck is a Borg anyways?").
