Sweet Promises

The essays in this book illuminate the general pattern of native-new-comer relations in Canada by referring to specific processes, events, people, and policies. They are designed to illustrate the several eras and themes that distinguish the history of Indian-white relations. Because the selections are drawn from the last sixty years of scholarship, they also collectively provide an opportunity to study some of the shifts in the attitudes of those who have studied native peoples. Succeeding generations of scholars build on past work, at times amplifying and at other times nullifying the legacy of those who have preceded them. It is in the debate within and between generations of investigators that understanding of the past evolves. Book jacket.
