Systems Biology in Psychiatric Research From High-Throughput Data to Mathematical Modeling

This first book to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent progress made in this break-through approach includes expert contributions from a variety of disciplines. Felix Tretter is Senior Physician at the Klinikum Munchen-Haar and Professor for Clinical Psychology at the University of Munich. He studied psychology, medicine and social science with separate doctorates, before starting work on experimental electrophysiology for several years at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry, and later turning to clinical psychiatry with a specialization in addiction. His present research interests are related to withdrawal syndromes and their treatment, systems research in healthcare delivery systems, computer simulation of neuronal networks in mental disorders and philosophy of science.
Peter J. Gebicke-Haerter is head of the Molecular Biology/DNA Chip Facility in the Department of Psychopharmacology at the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim. He started his career at the University of Gottingen and the Max Planck Institute, moved to Stanford University, Department of Neurobiology as a post-doc fellow, and then became a group leader in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Freiburg, After gaining his lecturing qualification, he switched to the Clinic for Psychiatry in Freiburg and in 2000 took up his current position in Mannheim. He has some 100 original publications, various reviews and book chapters to his name.
Eduardo R. Mendoza heads Computational Systems Biology groups at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and the University of the Philippines Diliman in Metro Manila. After his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Bonn, he worked in various technical and management positions within the international software industry. He returned to academe in 2002 to pursue his interest in modeling biological systems and has since co-authored over 20 publications, mostly with experimentalists and clinicians.
Georg Winterer is Professor of Psychiatry at the Psychiatric Clinic, Dusseldorf University, Associate Professor at the Institute of Medicine & Neuro science, Helmholtz Research Center Juelich, and Scientific Coordinator of the DFG research program "Nicotine: molecular and physiological effects in the central nervous system of humans". Prior to this, he was a research fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, USA, where he pioneered the endophenotyping approach in schizophrenia research combining genetics, neuroimaging and electrophysiology.
