With notes, and some account of the life of Tarlton. Celebrated for his tragic and comic acting, as well as his extemporal rhyming and jigs, Tarlton's "jests" may leave the modern reader at a loss. However, the modern reader must keep in mind that really none of the recorded witticisms of this time are very brilliant and it seems, with no other assistance, that Tarlton's face set people in a roar. Tarlton is mentioned throughout literature of the time, but very little of his own writings survive.
