Murder and manslaughter, robbery and theft, false testimony and corrupt courts: Our picture of the ancient world is based on such facts, but history may even be more exciting than any film. In this book 19 legendary crimes are presented, starting with Tutankhamun in ancient Egypt, to Caesar and Nero to Hypatia in Alexandria in late antiquity. With the help of this examples Cornelius Hartz shows how ancient society dealt with crimes, rule violations and misdemeanors. Together with selected passages from ancient sources, he provides a temporal and spatial variety by simultaneously creating a mosaic-like panorama of the history of antiquity in 1700 years.
