Shattered by his son's suicide, determined to save other kids, lawyer David Halper becomes a teacher. His students lead turbulent lives stunningly unlike the sentimental model of teenhood which high schools are programmed to match. Claudius makes bombs. Gordon sells sex lessons. Panther preaches Christianity. Becky gets pregnant. Lincoln keeps a loaded gun in his Mercedes.
Halper confronts Fenton, the principal, demanding changes that recognize and challenge these kids. Fenton refuses. Halper starts the Greenhouse, a futuristic school, run as an after-hours club. Fenton counters, accusing Halper of molesting students. The Greenhouse kids fight Fenton, first with orderly strikes, then explosive rage.
