Terrorist Rehabilitation and Counter-radicalisation: New Approaches to Counter-terrorism

This book seeks to explore the new frontiers in counter-terrorism research, analyses and practice, focusing on the imperative to rehabilitate terrorists.The book explores terrorist rehabilitation methodologies developed by practitioners and scholars, with the aim of demystifying the process, while at the same time extolling the virtues of efforts to reverse the effects of extremist indoctrination. The volume examines the rehabilitation efforts of several countries in their unique operational environments, and is divided into two main sections. The first comprises country-based case studies, from countries that have active rehabilitation programmes and selected case studies of countries with an aspiration for such a programme. The second section deals with themes such as recidivism rates and terrorist psychology. Concepts misconstrued by terrorists, and the legal dimension of terrorist rehabilitation are also explored in greater detail. This book provides a better understanding of the process of deradicalization, and will be the first step towards exploring the development of tools necessary to examine and address challenges faced by practitioners.This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, radical Islam, conflict resolution, war and conflict studies and IR/Security Studies.
