Testing Second Language Speaking

All second language learners have to be tested and assessed on their second language speaking ability. This book gives a broad overview of second language speaking assessment and blends theory and practice to provide a highly comprehensive volume on the subject.The theory of language testing is introduced via an historical overview of its development - from the early modern language examinations at Harvard in the 1870's, through to the use of language testing in World War Two, Vietnam and Korea, up to the explosion of language assessments over the past thirty years. The practical aspect of assessment is covered with a consideration of how tests are designed from a practical and procedural point of view, the piloting and administration of speaking tests and how they should be evaluated. This final section will also look to the future and what may be possible with emerging technologies such as virtual reality.
