The narrator, William Physick Zuber, was a San Jacinto veteran who spent his life defending the truth of his tale of the dramatic escape of Louis Rose from the Alamo after William Barret Travis drew a line in the sand and challenged Alamo defenders to cross it and die with him for Texas liberty. Through Zuber, Glowka ties the personal stories of Rose, Travis, James Bowie, David Crockett, John Sutherland, Juan Seguin, Madam Candelaria, Santa Anna, and others into a verse epic elevating history to heroic myth.
