An accessible and integrative approach to psychotherapy, Patrick Nolan's text outlines ways in which therapists can fit their therapy to the needs of their clients. Based on the premise that the psychotherapy is best served by individual tailoring, chapters cover theoretical approaches and traditions to find a balance between structuring and adapting. The text stresses the importance of therapists remaining present to clients through periods of high anxiety in order to make the client feel understood. Only through the mutual difficulty of the interactive client-therapist process can in-depth therapy happen.

Patrick Nolan is a Psychotherapist and the Director of the Irish Institute for Integrated Psychotherapy. He is co-editor of Object Relations and Integrative Psychotherapy: Tradition and Innovation in Theory and Practice (2002) and has written about integrative, psychoanalytic and body psychotherapy in numerous publications.
