This volume of essays seeks to establish a dialogue between poetry and philosophy where each could be said to read the other, moving past the treatment of nineteenth-century French poetry merely as an 'example'of philosophical concepts. The broad range of metaphysical, phenomenology, aesthetic, and ethical approaches announces important new paths for a reinvigorated study of lyric poetry in the decades to come.

Joseph Acquisto is an associate professor of French at the University of Vermont. He is the author of French Symbolist Poetry and the Idea of Music and two dozen articles on Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Vigny, Huysmans, Proust, among others.
