Women acted in many roles during the Civil War. In addition to homeowner and plantation/farm manager (while their husbands were at war), they also acted as nurses, vivandieres, spies, soldiers, matrons of hospitals, authors and (in one case) co-conspirators in the murder of a President. One Union women, Mary Walker, acted as a medical doctor, and won the Congressional Medal of Honor.
