Toward a General Theory of Acting Cognitive Science and Performance

Celebrating the mystery of the creative process, Toward a General Theory of Acting explores the actor's art through the lens of Dynamic Systems Theory and recent findings in the Cognitive Sciences. Lutterbie takes into account a vast array of training methods and types of theatre in the West, from Stanislavski to Lecoq. He discusses technique, improvisation, and creating a score and how actors bring the three together to create a reciprocal relationship with spectators that engages their thoughts, feelings, and imagination.

John Lutterbie is Professor at Stony Brook University, USA, where he teaches performance theory in the Department of Theatre Arts and is Co-director of the Center for Embodied Cognition.  He is the author of Hearing Voices: Modern Drama and the Problem of Subjectivity. In addition, he has published in numerous journals including Theatre Journal, The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Performance Research, The Journal of Psychiatry and the Humanities, and Modern Drama.
