Traditional Chinese Medicine in Aging and Disease Intervention

Aging is a natural process of life that affects all humans, and healthy aging is achievable, particularly through integrating the best of Eastern and Western medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history in Asian countries, which have antiaging properties and could intervene age-related disorders to enhance quality of life and health in the elderly in China. The book contains 19 chapters. The first chapter describes the anti-aging 18 types of common medicines from the "Shen Nong Ben Cao" that combat age-related disorders, including a description of research on these medicines and a simple introduction to the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Importantly, Chinese herbs introduced in this book is well-known, and the chemical components have been determined, which have not been contaminated with toxic compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms and may have serious side effects. These Chinese herbs have been widely used in China for intervention of anti-aging and age-related disease. We wish this book will facilitate progress toward healthy aging solutions and successful interventions.

Yumin Luo is a Professor of Neurology at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University and Vice director of Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases Research of Capital Medical University; Director of Cerebrovascular Diseases Research Lab of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University; Besides, Dr. Luo also services a chair of Neurology specialized committee of Beijing Association of traditional Chinese medicine and Western Medicine. Dr. Luo graduated from China Medical University in 1989; and obtained Doctoral Degree from Medical Center of Fudan University (Shanghai Medical University) in 1999, where she also served as Vice Professor in Department of Neurology in Huashan Hospital. Then, she worked University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as a visiting scholar from 1998 to 2006. In 2006, she joined the Institute of Cerebrovascular Disease Research of Xuanwu Hospital as a full Professor. Yumin Luo is a neurologist and has been engaged in the research of aging and age- related diseases for nearly 30 years. She received her traditional Chinese medicine training in Guang An Men Hospital of Chinese Academy of Chinese medicine from 2007 to 2009. Since then, she has been engaged in the research of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine intervening aging and age-related diseases. Dr. Luo mainly works on the neurobiology of cerebrovascular diseases (CVD), with the aim to identify new pharmacological targets. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Progress in Neurobiology, Stroke, Experimental of Neurology, Aging and Diseases, CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics. She also published several books including "Research Methodology of Cerebrovascular Diseases", "Rational use of traditional Chinese medicine injection in the treatment of nervous system diseases", and "Natural herbs bring forth hundred years old life".Dr. Yang is a Professor of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), Who achieved Bachelor and Master Degree at Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Ph.D. at BUCM, He was a Visiting Professor in the Chinese Medicine team at Middlesex University in the UK, a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, School of Medicine, Yamagata University, Japan, and a Visiting Professor at School of Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Yang is a specialist in Chinese herbal medicine, and commit to Chinese Medicine research, education and clinical practice, especially aging and aging-related cerebral and cardiovascular diseases. His research work is focusing on exploring the biological efficacy and molecular mechanisms of herbal medicine in regulating Cerebral and Cardiovascular disorders such as Coronary Heart Disease and Ischemic Cerebral Vascular Diseases. Dr. Yang is interested to exchange ideas with experts from different fields, which is necessary to improve the understanding of aging and aging-related diseases.Ziping Han is an assistant research fellow in Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases Research, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University. She achieved her Bachelor Degree at Qingdao University majoring in Clinical Medicine. In 2014, she achieved her Master Degree at Beijing Tiantan Hospital of Capital Medical University, majoring in Neurology. During the 3-year study in Department of Neurology, she came to realize the unascertainty and untreatability of multiple neurological diseases and determined to switch to neuroscience. In 2017, she obtained Doctoral Degree from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University. Since then, she has been working in the Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases Research in Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, engaged in the research on the neuroinflammatory response and neurogenesis following ischemic stroke injury. Relevant research results have been published in journals such as Experimental Neurology and Aging and Diseases, and have been supported by youth project of national natural science foundation and general project of science and technology plan of municipal education commission.Kunlin Jin is a Tenured Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, United States. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in China, where he also served as Assistant Professor at Beijing University. He came to the US in 1992 and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco and then at the University of Pittsburgh from 1995-96, when he was promoted to Instructor. In 1999 he accepted an offer to join the Buck Institute as an Assistant Scientist and has since been promoted to Assistant and then Professor. Dr. Jin is an author of over 250 peer-reviewed, original research papers. Dr. Jin's recent papers have been published in competitive journals including the JCI, PNAS and Nature. More importantly, he has been a leader in several areas of investigation related to aging and age-related diseases, specifically the roles of adult neurogenesis and of endogenous neuroprotective proteins in regulating the brain's response to stroke, and most recently, the effect of aging on these processes. During his follow-up work, he made incredible findings that will profoundly influence the way we think about treatment of brain diseases by cell replacement using stem cells. Dr. Jin first discovered that brain injuries, including those caused by stroke and neurodegenerative diseases can stimulate stem cells to generate new neurons in rodents as well as in human. In addition, his encouraging findings include how these neural stem cells can be manipulated by growth factors, even after intranasal administration. For many years, there has been the hope that stem cells may open a new avenue for the treatment of brain diseases. Dr. Jin's discoveries make this a reality. In 2019, Dr. Jin first proposed a microcirculation theory of aging: aging is the process of continuous impairment of microcirculation in the body. In addition to his excellent accomplishments, Dr. Jin is also the founder and Chief-in-Editor of Aging and Disease (www.aginganddisease.org), and the founder of International Society on Aging and Disease (www.isoad.org).
