ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Random House Literature Classics presents a carefully prepared edition, masterfully illustrated, of this essential Spanish novel of the nineteenth century.

Written in 1892, Tristana is constructed within the “contemporary Spanish novel” series, a compound of works where the author tried to portray the uses and traditions of society in the nineteenth century.

Tackling the subject of women’s emancipation, Benito Pérez Galdós tells the story of Tristana, a young woman living under the custody of Don Lope, a sensitive Don Juan that seduces her and destroys her innocence. This woman, a dreamer with an idealistic nature, swiftly perceives the injustice involving her feminine condition, and intents to free herself of her surrounding circumstances, even if these emancipation attempts, being victim of a sordid and repressive society, lead to inevitable failure.
