Set in Cape Town in 1989, when apartheid and global political structures were disintegrating, the novel explores the nine months of pregnancy in the life of Ruth and culminates in the birth of her baby, of her as an adult and of the new South Africa (in the tradition of Rayda Jacobs's 'Sachs Street' and Zubeida Jaffer's 'Our Generation'). Ruth is white, middle class and vaguely left. Her lover, and father of her child, is an MK operative, in jail for terrorism for most of the novel, a muscian, handsome, narcissistic, a philanderer and, together with most of the characters in the novel, emotionally dysfunctional.
