His education is interrupted when he learns the family needs him at home. Before he can reach home he earns more badges of courage along the way, and in the process finds a faithful friend.When Ft. Sumter is attacked, Tom is drawn into the war, but he struggles with his conscience as he realizes the casualties of war include conflicting ties. The notorious Salisbury Confederate prison becomes the stage that forms his beliefs in regards to the war.Victims of Conscience is historical fiction; however it is based on historical facts. This author's conscience plagued him since he saw the memorial to the Prison in Salisbury. He read about the many deaths due to disease, exposure and starvation from Oct. 1894 and the first part of 1865 and had to tell the story from the viewpoint of prisoner and guard.
