A story of a gambling family's life narrated through the eyes and thoughts of a boy, age five to fifteen. The time is the postwar decade of change in the USA, 1945 to 1955. The setting is a Podunk called Wann, located near the Platte River in eastern Nebraska.Wann's population was about 30. It was a village where nothing ever happened. The family of seven lived through darkly humorous times which the mother endured while the father survived his hard times and delighted in his good times. How was life maintained in a small village with only a general store, a church, and a stone schoolhouse? All entertainment had to be made up, and the four brothers' imaginations knew no limits. However, occasionally an event did occur, and sometimes the boys' actions and the father's schemes met with varying degress of trouble.
