Through a collection of stories from slaves and slave owners in the United States, Wealthy Black Southerners brings to light the tragic past of freed slaves, hardworking landowners, farmers, politicians fighting against injustice and many more vivid characters.

Linked through the tragic retelling of America's dark past in the South, *Patrice Edwards* weaves a narrative that explains the complexity of the burgeoning colonies throughout the 1800s. This work of historical fiction draws inspiration from true events of the Ku Klux Klan, the amnesty bill and the Civil War.

Patrice Edwards is a poet, an educator, and the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-nine books, including Wealthy Black Southerners, the follow-up to her Newbery Medal–winning novel, The Crossover. Patrice writes for children of all ages. Her other picture books include Undefeated, Animal Arky, and Out of Character. A regular contributor to NPR's Morning Edition, Patrice is the recipient of several awards, including the Coretta Scott King Author Honor, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, three NAACP Image Award nominations, and the 2018 inaugural Conroy Legacy Award. She believes that poetry can change the world, and she uses it to inspire and empower young people through her writing workshop, the Writing Thing.
