In this study, Joseph Wittreich demonstrates why Milton may prove to be the poet for the new millennium. Milton will be so to the extent that through him we see the upheavals in the humanities as deriving not from a revision of the canon but rather, as Bill Readings insists, from "a crisis in the function of the canon."

Joseph Wittreich is Distinguished Professor of English at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York. His previous books are on Shakespeare, Milton, and Blake. Two of his recent studies, Interpreting “Samson Agonistes” and Shifting Contexts: Reinterpreting “Samson Agonistes” are credited with establishing a new--and now current--reading of Milton’s tragedy.
