1978. A black Mercedes drives through Wood Edge Council Estate to collect a small girl from her mother. Being free of her child, and now with money to spend, the young mother makes her way to the off licence on Wood Edge Road, where the shop's owner, Max Soper, takes pleasure in serving the community. For a price!Across the road from the shop, a father and his young son walk closely, hand in hand, but the everyday image they present is not what it seems.What is the connection between these events and thirty years later when two teenaged best friends, Ben Schofield and Danny Wilkinson, both pupils at Wood Edge Comprehensive School, have vanished without a trace from their homes? Both have gone missing during the night before the school year starts, but their disappearances have been a year apart, and the second would seem to have evidence of foul play. As the next school year progresses, the families and friends of the boys try to make sense of it all as they share their grief. They try to hold on to hope that the boys will return, and are led to question their own lives, knowing things can never be the same.And as the next school year draws on, another of the young friends, Adam Preston, feels that someone is watching him, but doesn't tell anyone. While everyone is aware of Adam's poor home life, the extent of his vulnerability remains unrecognised, or even overlooked, by those who might have been able to help.Who might be setting his or her sights on the next target?.
