Recent reissues of his recordings have helped to renew interest in this remarkable American jazz saxophonist who made twenty-five LP records as a leader for one independent record label, a dozen more for other companies and numerous sideman appearances in the 1950s and '60s (far more than most musicians in his sphere). There are books about John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and other key figures of the bop and hard bop movements of that time but no books about Hank Mobley. The general consensus seems be be that Coltrane and Rollins were more verbose, possessed hard, edgy tones in the fashion of the day and tended to overshadow Mobley's quieter approach.Hank Mobley (1930-86) had a light, lyrical sound that was all his own and a style descended directly from Charlie Parker. This books celebrates the music the man made, the joy in much of his playing, the uniqueness of his approach and sound, and of his music making and writing.
