The statistics are staggering: more than 60% of the population of the U.S. has weight issues. A significant percentage in this statistic are morbidly obese. Research shows the severe damage physical damage caused by smoking, yet, around 22% of Americans smoke. Millions of us are on medications for various emotional problems. Our society cannot build prisons fast enough. Over five million individuals have eating disorders. The list goes on and on. In my writing, I call these behaviors self-defeating behaviors. Whatever label you want to use, the results come down to the same bottom line: people are hurting themselves, others, and the culture at large. Why do these negative behaviors keep recurring? As a psychologist, I have dedicated my professional life to answering that question. I have come to a conclusion: many of the individuals who repeat these negative behaviors and many of the various therapists and program who try to help these individuals, lack accurate information on how to make positive, permanent, behavioral changes. Without this critical information, they do the next best thing. Instead of changing the negative behaviors, they "try" to contain the behaviors. This is accomplished by: ongoing therapy, support group, incarceration, medications, etc. The goal of YOU DON'T KNOW to CHANGE is to provide individuals with accurate information that they can apply, and eliminate their self-defeating behaviors. The models that comprise this book are presented. Then the models are applied to major self-defeating behaviors in our culture: weight issues, inactivity, smoking, alcohol abuse, anxiety, worry, depression, anger, and troubled relationships. After this section of the book, a mini-workbook is available to the reader. So the reader can interact with exercises that "walk" the reader through the process of replacing their self-defeating behaviors with positive behaviors. After developing this book I applied it to my weight issues, and lost over 100 pounds.
