He received teachings from masters in all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, his principal teacher being Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. Merrill Peterson studied at the University of Virginia and U.C. Berkeley, as well as with masters from the Sakya, Gelug, and Nyingma traditions.
