Eigse: A Journal of Irish Studies Douglas Hyde: Irish Ideology and International Impact

Drawing on the latest research on diaries, personal correspondence, memoir reflections, newspaper reports and State archives, this collection of essays by leading scholars on Douglas Hyde and the Irish language revival traces developments in the formulation and explication of Irish revival ideology. It also interrogates pivotal aspects of the revival movement’ s impact and influence as well as its interaction with the Irish diaspora and Celtic scholars in North America and Continental Europe.

Liam Mac Mathú na is Professor Emeritus of Irish at University College Dublin. His extensive publications on Irish language, literature and culture include Bé arla sa Ghaeilge (2007), a study of Irish/English code-mixing in literature composed in Irish 1600– 1900, and a new edition of An tAthair Peadar Ua Laoghaire’ s ground-breaking novel, Sé adna (2011). He is editor of é igse: A Journal of Irish Studies, which is published by the National University of Ireland. He is currently engaged in a study of the Ó Neachtain circle of Irish-language scholars in Dublin, 1700– 1750, and the diaries of Douglas Dr Má ire Nic an Bhaird is a lecturer in Irish Language and Literature and History of Education in the Froebel Department, Maynooth University.
