This book throws new light on racism - the attitudes that underlie it, its causes and manifestations. It is based on the findings of the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry in Britain, with particular emphasis on education and training. The resulting MacPherson report asks society to rethink racism and the strategies for combating it. Reena Bhavani has carried out new research which points the way forward to realizing this rethinking. She analyzes the legal inquiry in detail and interviews some key figures involved. She examines the police culture and the history of training on racial issues and contextualizes this in a clear picture of what such training needs to achieve.
