Social Transformation and Migration National and Local Experiences in South Korea, Turkey, Mexico and Australia

This book examines theories and specific experiences of international migration and social transformation, with special reference to the effects of neo-liberal globalization on four societies with vastly different historical and cultural characteristics: South Korea, Australia, Turkey and Mexico. All of these countries have undergone far-reaching changes linked to incorporation of their economics into global value chains over the last decades. At the same time they have experienced new forms of immigration and emigration, which are closely related to the interaction between global forces and national and local forms of adaptation and resistance. Social Transformation and Migration conceptualizes migration not as the result of change nor a cause of change, but as an integral component of these transformation processes.

Stephen Castles holds a Research Chair in Sociology at the University of Sydney, Australia. He is a sociologist and political economist, and works on international migration dynamics, global governance, multiculturalism, transnationalism, migration and development, and regional migration trends in Africa, Asia and Europe.
 

Derya Ozkul is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, Australia. In addition to her doctoral thesis, she has taught as a tutor and lecturer in the Sociology Department. She holds a BA degree in Political Sciences from Bogazici University, Turkey and an MSc degree in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics, UK.
 

Magdalena Arias Cubas is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, Australia. In addition to her studies, she has worked as a tutor and lecturer for the Department of Political Economy. She has also worked as a research assistant for the project 'Social Transformation and International Migration in the 21st Century'.
