Beginning Algebra with Arithmetic Reviewis an activity-based text designed to help students gain a strong conceptual foundation by building connections among topics of mathematics in a meaningful, real-world context. Guided by the instructor and prompted by the text activities, students explore, make conjectures, interpret, discuss, and ultimately find meaning and understanding in basic mathematical principles. Students also are prompted to draw on real-life knowledge and experiences and to develop skills in creating and interpreting graphs, tables, and symbolic expressions. Based on the 18 modules of the award-winningMaricopa Mathematics Modules, this text embodies a thorough implementation of the AMATYC Crossroads Standards and provides a seamless transition from Basic Mathematics through Introductory Algebra. Activities, introduced by short expositions, provide the basis of organization for the text and help instructors develop a daily routine of active student involvement. Data is presented (or student-gathered), models are given (or student-created), and questions are asked which are specifically designed to lead students to a real-world, mathematical connection to the concept. Students learn to use the Rule of Four to express and explore mathematical ideas graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally. Graphing calculators are used daily throughout all the modules. Any graphing utility can be used, but it should have data lists, data plotting, and regression capability.
