This is the story of one child's experience with the ocean and a coral reef. Kupe is the son of a fisherman, and he loves the ocean. One night, when he is helping his father fish from their canoe, he sees something amazing-little bubbles coming from the bottom of the ocean. He collects some and takes them home, and his mother suggests he visit the Atitia Center, where scientists work together with local educators and traditional experts. He learns from a graduate student there that he witnessed coral spawning-a fantastic event that occurs every year when corals reproduce and release their young. Kupe then releases his baby corals back into the ocean once he realizes how important it is to have a healthy ocean where young corals grow, as the future of the reef depends on them.
