This comprehensive volume surveys Franco-German relations from the French Revolution to the 1990s by bringing together cutting-edge contributions from a varied group of scholars in Europe and the United States. It closes a significant gap in the scholarly Anglophone literature, highlighting and discussing the historical foundations of the contemporary Franco-German relationship, if and in what respect there is a "special" relationship between France and Germany, and what role it plays in Europe. Using a multidsciplinary approach, this book integrates contemporary research on the subject into the larger context of European studies, making a valuable contribution to the continent's political and diplomatic history.
