This volume is the outcome from a conference held in 2008 to celebrate 50 years of the Council for British Archaeology's Wessex group. The Wessex area includes many of Britain's most iconic sites, such as Stonehenge and Avebury, but also those of later periods, such as Roman Silchester, the medieval settlement of Hamwih (Southampton), the Mary Rose ship, and the Kennet and Avon Canal. The papers, written by many of Britain's leading archaeologists, consider both what has been learnt over the past 50 years, and the directions for future research. The book is enlivened by the personal reminiscences from those who worked on key excavations.
