Modeling Selective Visual Attention introduces the definition of visual attention, the significance of psychology and computer vision, existing computational visual attention models, and the authors' contributions on visual attention models and applications in image and video processing, with an emphasis on application examples from various fields. The book begins with a simple and interesting introduction of visual attention , such as definition of attention, attention types: top-down attention and bottom-up attention, historical review of visual attention and some examples about visual attention selection. This is followed by an introduction of visual attention selection from the perspectives of psychological and cognitive science. Next, the author's provide a review of existing computational visual selection models, followed by their own neural network learning model based on unsupervised learning and lateral inhibition between neurons. The authors go on to propose a simplifying visual attention model based on quaternion Fourier transform to approximate the neural model covered previous in the book. Biological justification of the frequency model is proved mathematically and biologically in the following chapter, and then application examples of the frequency model are given for image and video coding, object tracking, image and video quality assessment and remote sensing . The book concludes with a discussion of controversial issues, such as covert attention and shifts versus saccades, location versus object centered attention, spotlight and zoom lens models, and feature-based versus object-based attention.
